Our paper “Quantifying interdisciplinary synergy in higher STEM education” has been published in EPJ Data Science!
Summary
This study proposes a framework to quantify and leverage interdisciplinarity within university-level STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curricula. By utilizing large language models (LLMs) to standardize large-scale official educational data from South Korea, we apply Pedagogical and Information Theory-based metrics to evaluate dual-field curricula. The proposed model introduces a “curriculum synergy score” showing that higher interdisciplinarity occurs in combinations of closely related engineering fields, which act as the core structures, while basic natural sciences provide the peripheral fundamental concepts.
