Summary

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the global distribution of questionable (predatory) publications and journals and how they interact with different countries. We distinguish between low-impact regional journals—which serve a vital role in regional academic environments—and questionable journals, which publish globally with business models that can be detrimental to the broader academic community. The research highlights how both quantitative evaluation systems and social stratification in academia drive authors in the academic periphery toward these questionable publishing outlets.
